Elections on the Web 2007: Antonio Trillanes Website Reviewed

Author’s Note: Standard Web Standards has started a “blog mini-series” on the notable websites of Philippine elections candidates (For everyone’s information, Filipinos will be voting for national and local officials this coming May 14, 2007).

Antonio Trillanes

The hyper-critical Antonio Trillanes made a name for himself when he led a group of young army officers to stage a mutiny in 2003 and took over the Oakwook (now Ascott) Center in Makat City, Philippines.

While he arguably got the public’s sympathy as he came of as an idealistic officer tired of the army’s shenanigans, it would take more than uprising for the voting public to like his website.

  1. Bland of the land - The website uses a CMS, which requires some work to make the site “your own.” Trillanes’ site is just bland. It’s like reading the newspaper in liue of a bedtime story.
  2. Why should I vote for you again? – This question is never adequately answered, unforunately.
  3. Too news-y – Perhaps this is because of the CMS used, but the site comes of as too news oriented. Heck, the blog isn’t even a blog in the truest sense.
  4. Still some errors – Because the site looks base, it is easy to point out errors like the newsflash ticker and lay-out problems with Firefox.
  5. Bloat - While the use of interactive features is a nice touch on the right websites, they come off as fluff and bloat on a site that fails to address basic questions like navigation. (That is one IA/usability nightmare)
  6. What, no sponsors? – I find it weird that the site has a banner ad… that links to itself!
  7. A good word – Is there anything to like about the site? Well, the site design is clean and media on the homepage is decent.

Oh boy, that was just a hard review. It’s one thing to have a badly implemented site that tries to get the message across but what’s worse is a mediocre site that is just flat on almost all aspects. Now, if this site can just have the spunk of the Oakwood mutineers…
